The biggest enemy in IELTS Reading isn't vocabulary—it's the clock. 3 passages, 40 questions, 60 minutes. Many students panic and fail to finish. This guide reveals the mathematical 15-20-25 strategy used by Band 8+ scorers to complete all passages with time to spare.
The Problem: Why Most Students Run Out of Time
Most students spend 20 minutes on each passage. This is a HUGE mistake. Passage 3 is always harder and longer than Passage 1. Spending equal time on each means you'll rush through the hardest section.
The Solution: The 15-20-25 Rule
Adjust your time allocation based on difficulty. This gives you more time where you need it most.
Passage 1
15 mins
Easiest questions. Speed is key. Don't overthink.
Passage 2
20 mins
Standard difficulty. Steady pace.
Passage 3
25 mins
Complex academic text. Needs more time.
Total: 60 minutes. No time left for transferring answers (they're already on the answer sheet).
Skimming vs. Scanning: Know the Difference
Skimming (2-3 mins per passage)
Reading quickly to get the general idea (gist). Use this BEFORE answering questions.
- Read the Title & Subtitle carefully
- Read the first sentence of each paragraph
- Ignore details, examples, and statistics
- Goal: Understand the main topic and structure
Scanning (As needed)
Looking for specific information (keywords, names, dates). Use this WHILE answering questions.
- Don't read sentences fully
- Move your eyes like a laser scanner
- Look for Capital Letters (Names), Numbers (Dates), or Italics
- Goal: Find the exact location of an answer
The "2-Minute Rule" for Hard Questions
Don't Get Stuck
The Correct Order of Operations
Follow this process for EVERY passage:
- Skim the whole passage (2-3 mins) - title, first sentences, conclusion
- Read the first set of questions (30 seconds)
- Scan the passage for keywords from those questions
- Read carefully ONLY the sentence containing the keyword (and maybe 1 sentence before/after)
- Answer the question
- Repeat steps 2-5 for all question sets
Never read the entire passage word-by-word. You'll run out of time!
Time-Saving Tips
- Transfer answers as you go: Don't wait until the end. Write on the answer sheet immediately after each passage.
- Use pencil, not pen: Easier to erase and correct mistakes quickly.
- Practice with a timer: Get comfortable with the pressure. Use alarms at 15, 35, and 60 minutes.
- Don't leave blanks: There's no negative marking. If you're unsure, guess!
Frequently Asked Questions
Prioritize accuracy on Passages 1 & 2 first. If you're running out of time on Passage 3, quickly scan for easy question types (matching names, True/False) and guess intelligently on the rest.
