Before you start studying, you must know the battlefield. Here is a complete breakdown of the IELTS Academic test format: timing, question types, scoring, and what to expect on test day. Understanding the structure is the first step to success.
Test Overview
IELTS Academic is designed for students applying to universities or professional registration. The test has 4 components and takes approximately 2 hours 45 minutes (excluding Speaking, which may be on a different day).
Important: Listening, Reading, and Writing are taken in one continuous sitting with no breaks. Speaking is usually scheduled separately (same day or different day).
1. Listening (30 Minutes + 2 mins transfer time)
4 Sections, 40 Questions Total
- Section 1: Conversation (Social context) - e.g., Booking a hotel, ordering food. Usually the easiest.
- Section 2: Monologue (Social context) - e.g., A guide talking about a park, museum tour.
- Section 3: Conversation (Academic context) - e.g., Students discussing a project, assignment.
- Section 4: Monologue (Academic context) - e.g., A university lecture. Usually the hardest.
Note: You hear each recording ONCE only. No repeats!
2. Reading (60 Minutes)
3 Passages, 40 Questions Total
Texts are from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. Topics are academic but you don't need subject knowledge.
- Passage 1: Easier, descriptive text (e.g., how something works).
- Passage 2: More complex, discursive text (e.g., opinions on a topic).
- Passage 3: Long, complex, argumentative text (e.g., academic debate).
Question Types: Multiple choice, True/False/Not Given, Matching headings, Summary completion, etc.
3. Writing (60 Minutes)
2 Tasks
- Task 1 (20 mins, 150 words minimum): Describe a graph, chart, table, diagram, or map. You must summarize and compare data objectively.
- Task 2 (40 mins, 250 words minimum): Write an essay in response to a point of view, argument, or problem. This is worth twice as many marks as Task 1.
Tip: Manage your time! Many students spend too long on Task 1 and rush Task 2.
4. Speaking (11-14 Minutes)
3 Parts (Face-to-Face with Examiner)
- Part 1 (4-5 mins): Introduction & Interview. Questions about yourself (work, study, hometown, hobbies).
- Part 2 (3-4 mins): Long Turn / Cue Card. You get 1 minute to prepare, then speak for 2 minutes on a given topic.
- Part 3 (4-5 mins): Discussion. More abstract questions related to Part 2 topic. Tests your ability to discuss ideas.
Note: The entire test is recorded for quality assurance.
Scoring System
Each skill is scored from 0-9 in half-band increments (6.0, 6.5, 7.0, etc.). Your Overall Band Score is the average of all four skills, rounded to the nearest half-band.
Example: L: 7.5, R: 7.0, W: 6.5, S: 7.0
Average: (7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 7.0
Overall Band Score: 7.0
